The vanishing billabong

OUR IMPACT

Billabongs provide a temporary water supply for animals after a flood, but soakage and evaporation soon lead pastoralists to resort to pumping water from bores into troughs. Converging livestock and native animal tracks inflict heavy grazing pressure on the surrounding vegetation. Impact on the land and water availability are increasing problems as a result of climate change and record hot and dry periods.
