A Stewart Island Weka family are just centimetres away from the lens. These flightless birds are naturally inquisitive and approach people readily. This subspecies (one of four in New Zealand) has survived almost exclusively on offshore islands, but Wekas are now beginning to make a comeback thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.
