Squabbling Petrels

ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR

Observing this frenzied attack on a fresh Seal carcass by Giant Petrels, one could imagine a dinosaur heritage inherent in their primordial savagery. In the background a bird bespattered with blood asserts its claim with primitive ‘manteling’ behaviour, while the others fight for a chance to gorge themselves.
