Emperor Penguin huddle

ANIMAL BEHAVIOUR – Highly commended

At midwinter, several of us drove six hours in darkness across sea-ice to the rookery. Working at –26°C, we had an hour of twilight to conduct a photographic census of these male Emperor Penguins incubating eggs. I had no tripod, so I handheld my camera to capture the centre of the huddle.
